What is Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery like?

A Brazilian Butt Lift takes fat from an area you don’t want it, and moves it to an area you do want it: the derriere! This implant-free procedure makes it possible for Dr. Anthony Miller to augment buttock size while also sculpting the overall shape.

Like all surgery, BBL will require downtime. Dr. Miller and our staff make sure you are well-prepared for it and get answers to all of your questions. You will of course have contact information to reach us during your recovery, and you will have scheduled follow-up appointments.

Initially, in the hours and first few days after BBL, it is normal to experience:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Discomfort (can be controlled with medications recommended by the surgeon)

You will also need to wear a compression garment on the areas that have been treated with liposuction. You’ll need to take some time off from work (up to 3 weeks) and strenuous physical activity (4-6 weeks).

You will see a dramatic difference in bruising and swelling after 2-3 weeks. Over the next several months, subtle levels of swelling will continue to resolve.

One of the more challenging aspects of recovery is keeping weight and pressure off your buttocks. Because Brazilian Butt Lift surgery moves real fat cells to the buttocks, the results are dependent on the survival of as many of those transferred fat cells as possible (it’s completely normal and expected for a certain percentage not to make it). When you sit or sleep on your back after BBL, the pressure reduces blood flow to the area. Reduced blood flow leads to the death of the fat cells. That is why it’s important to stay off your butt for up to 8 weeks after surgery. You’ll have a donut pillow to use for times when you absolutely have to sit down. We ask you to sleep on your side or your stomach during these 8 weeks. You’ll need to use the donut pillow for a while, once we clear you to start sitting again.

That being said, the results of Brazilian Butt Lift are well-worth the recovery time! Although the fat can change with weight loss or weight gain, you can consider your results long-lasting. After about 2 months, you’ll be looking at your final, beautiful results.
