What is Restylane®?

When you hear Restylane®, you might think of a singular product. In reality, Restylane is a comprehensive family of soft tissue fillers, each of which is carefully formulated around the active ingredient, hyaluronic acid. In this family, we have several unique formulations. Each is designed to address specific concerns related to the decline of tissue volume in the face or hands. We turn to various Restylane products to achieve outstanding results for our patients. These include:

  • Restylane®-L
  • Restylane® Kysse
  • Restylane® Silk
  • Restylane® Lyft
  • Restylane® Refyne
  • Restylane® Defyne
  • Restylane® Contour

What Makes Restylane Different from Other Dermal Fillers?

Restylane is made to work with the foundation of hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance, so you do not need to face special testing to ensure you will not react to the product. In the various Restylane products, particles of hyaluronic acid are linked together using proprietary methods. These particles are sized differently based on the intended results. For example, to plump the lips without causing too much firmness, a soft tissue filler may link smaller, softer particles of hyaluronic acid. Restylane Lyft, on the other hand, contains larger particles of the active ingredient to achieve a more structural result. Restylane® is not unique in the land of dermal fillers, but is made in a specific way that achieves outstanding results.

What Areas can Restylane Treat?

We are pleased to offer Restylane® treatments for just about any form of facial rejuvenation, as well as hand rejuvenation, that you might desire. Because we have a variety of specific products to choose from within the Restylane® family, we can turn to this product to address concerns such as:

  • Undereye bags and puffiness
  • Undereye hollows
  • Flat, deflated cheekbones
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Thin, deflated lips
  • Nasolabial creases
  • Marionette lines
  • Soft, sagging jawline, jowls
  • Wrinkles on the neck
  • Aging hands

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Restylane?

Healthy adults are generally considered good candidates for Restylane® injections. When you visit our Orange County office to discuss facial rejuvenation, we'll discuss your health and medical history. Provided that you are not pregnant or nursing and do not have an active skin infection in the treatment area, you should be a good candidate for Restylane® treatment. Keep in mind that Restylane® contains lidocaine. Some people are allergic to this anesthetic. If you are, you should not receive Restylane® with lidocaine included in the formula.

How Long Do the Effects of Restylane Last?

Your results from Restylane treatment are temporary. Your body will break down the hyaluronic acid that holds water molecules in place over time. As this happens, the effects of your treatment will gradually diminish. The linking of hyaluronic acid particles helps the product remain in place for extended periods. Generally, we anticipate the results of various Restylane products to last one year or longer. The most structural dermal fillers, often used for jowl or cheek correction, last about two years.

Are there any Side Effects from Restylane?

Restylane® has been carefully developed to work with minimal risks of side effects. Because it is an injectable treatment, and injections break the skin, there are risks of the following:

  • Infection
  • Skin discoloration due to scarring
  • Temporary scabbing at injection sites (don't pick!)
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Temporary tenderness
  • Nodule formation that decreases over time
