How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

The methods Dr. Miller uses for labiaplasty are tailored specifically to the individual patient and her goals for the procedure.

The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, which are situated inside the labia majora. To reduce these tissues, Dr. Miller uses two methods. In a “wedge” incision, a vertical wedge of labia minor tissue is removed. In an “edge” excision, he removes tissue along the edge of the lips. In many cases, extra folds of the clitoral hood are also reduced at the same time.

In cases where the labia majora are too large and uncomfortable, Dr. Miller will remove an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.

Will Labiaplasty Affect My Sensation During Intimacy?

These surgeries don’t remove or damage any of the sensory nerves in the area, so your sensitivity shouldn’t be changed. The reality is that, since unnecessary tissue has been removed, many women report enhanced sensation after having labiaplasty. Plus, it’s important to know that these surgeries don’t involve the clitoris at all, so there cannot be any change in sensation there.

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for My Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty recovery isn’t overly difficult, but patience is key. You will need to lay low for the first five days or so. You’ll need to ice the area for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first day or two. This will help with swelling and pain. So, your preparation should plan for this. Prepare where you’re going to chill out. Have a good book, the remote, your laptop or iPad, whatever things you want to make laying around easier.

It’s a good idea to have someone help around the house. You won’t feel like cooking or doing any housework for a few days.

What Will My Recovery Entail after Labiaplasty?

Patients need to restrict their activity to low-key choices for the first five days. There will be some swelling and pain that can be lessened with icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 off. Exercise will generally have to wait for two to three weeks. Sexual intercourse needs to wait for at least 4-6 weeks after your surgery. Engaging in sex too soon presents a risk of tearing the incisions. Tampons need to be avoided for six weeks, as well. Trim labiaplasty may offer faster recovery times, as Dr. Miller will discuss with you.

What Kind of Results Should I Expect from Labiaplasty?

Your results are immediate, but there will be some swelling. In a week or two your results should be fully realized. After this surgery, most patients have reduced chafing and physical discomfort, an improved sex life, and a boost in confidence.

When Can I Resume Sexual Activity after Labiaplasty?

During the early part of your recovery, you won’t feel like having sex. From there, you’ll still need to proceed with caution. As discussed above, sexual intercourse cannot happen for from 4-6 weeks after this surgery, and it could be up to two months. This is very important, as it’s possible to tear your incisions. During your post-op appointments, Dr. Miller can give you an idea of when you can return to sexual activity.

Does Labiaplasty Leave Visible Scarring?

The scars from these procedures are very small. Plus, they can be effectively hidden in the natural creases of the area, making them virtually invisible moving forward. Thanks to the board-certified surgical expertise and experience of Dr. Miller, you’ll be happy with your results and the lack of visible scarring.

What Are the Risks Involved with Labiaplasty?

Thanks to the highly vascular nature of the vaginal area, risks with this surgery are low. The risks are for potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is a higher risk the more tissue that is removed, but the risks are still quite low. Again, the board-certified training, expertise, and experience of Dr. Miller ensures these are very low-risk procedures at Orange County Cosmetic Surgery.

Is Labiaplasty Painful?

There are many nerves in the tissues involved in these procedures. But that doesn’t mean these are overly painful recoveries. If you follow the recovery instructions we provide, your pain can be mitigated quite successfully. Icing is key to keeping your pain down.
