The desire to maintain attractive, long-lasting results motivates many patients to live active, healthy lifestyles after lipo surgery. Not only will these new lifestyle changes help you look your best, but they also provide far-reaching health benefits as you get older.

Lipoplasty Candidates

A healthy diet and regular exercise are crucial to helping you look and feel your best. When it comes to fat loss, there are simply some things that a healthy lifestyle can’t accomplish. Many people, no matter how in-shape they are, struggle with one or two “problem areas” where fat stubbornly lingers. This can be caused by genetics or a variety of other factors that can’t be controlled.

If the presence of unsightly pockets of fat is causing you embarrassment or self-consciousness, you are likely a good candidate for liposuction surgery. It is, however, important to understand that liposuction is a body contouring procedure, and not a weight loss surgery. Good lipo candidates are generally healthy and at or near their ideal body weight. Removing excessive amounts of weight through liposuction can increase the risk of complication.

Ideal candidates for liposuction should be:

Liposuction Orange County CA
  • In generally good physical health
  • Do not smoke or use nicotine replacement options or e-cigarettes – all of which can complicate your recovery and results
  • Prepared to undergo a surgical procedure
  • Capable of taking time away from work or other responsibilities for a brief recovery period
  • Able to follow all of Dr. Miller’s pre and postoperative instructions
  • Willing to limit physical activity according to Dr. Miller’s recommendations

This list is only a very general overview and should not be considered a substitute for meeting personally with Dr. Miller to assess your liposuction candidacy. During your free initial consult, Dr. Miller will discuss your expectations and options. He will answer your questions, address your concerns, review your medical history and determine your candidacy for liposuction.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction, also known as traditional liposuction, is performed as an outpatient procedure, which allows you to begin your recuperation in the comfort of your home on the day of your surgery. The length of time required for your procedure will depend on the number and location of areas you want to treat, in addition to the amount of fat you want to remove.

Tumescent liposuction involves the use of a sterile saline solution containing lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine (a capillary constrictor). This tumescent fluid is injected into the targeted fat, breaking it up for easier and more comfortable removal. Tumescent fluid:

  • Speeds recovery
  • Reduces bruising
  • Decreases bleeding risks
  • Minimizes the impact to surrounding tissue
  • Reduces swelling
  • Provides local anesthesia

A small, hollow tube called a cannula is then inserted into tiny incisions near the treatment area. The targeted fat is suctioned out through the cannula.

The lidocaine in tumescent fluid remains active in your body for nearly 24 hours, easing discomfort well after the procedure has ended. Once the effects of lidocaine have subsided, you can effectively manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Dr. Miller will be happy to answer any questions you may have during your initial consultation.

How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?

In a certain respect, liposuction results are permanent, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still gain weight after the procedure. This means that you play an active role in determining how long your results last. Generally speaking, you can expect the following long-term results from liposuction:

  • Permanent removal of fat cells: Once fat cells are removed, they will not return.
  • Weight gain is still possible: Any fat cells left behind, or surrounding the treatment area, can still fluctuate in size and affect your body shape. If you gain a significant amount of weight, regions other than the treated area are typically affected first. If you continue to put on weight, even the treated areas can be affected.

If you undergo lipoplasty, it is important to maintain a stable weight after your procedure. Liposuction is not a weight loss method and your results are dependent on your adherence to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Maintaining Your Liposuction Results

Since fat cells are removed with lipo surgery, they can’t “grow back.” However, liposuction cannot prevent new weight gain, so it’s up to you to take proper care of your body. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a triathlete to maintain your liposuction results; you just have to make certain smart decisions.

The following are some useful tips to help maintain your liposuction results:

  • Nutrition: Eat meals centered on vegetables and lean meats, snack on fruits and nuts, reduce your sugar intake and avoid processed foods.
  • Stay active: For at least 60 minutes a day, walk, jog, swim, bike or engage in some other form of mild exercise.
  • Work out: Although you don’t have to hit the gym for more advanced types of exercise, power yoga, resistance training or weight training are all great ways to enhance your results and help you feel as good as you look.

The long-term quality of your lipo results depends on the amount of effort you put into maintaining them. Some patients benefit from the assistance of fitness trainers and nutritionists, but common sense and hard work go a long way. Smart choices and dedication to healthy living can help your liposuction results to last for a lifetime.

Will I Have Liposuction Scars?

Incisions are necessary in liposuction surgery, which will inevitably result in scarring. As a board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Miller understands how to strategically position the cannula in a way that minimizes scarring. He will also provide you with detailed pre and postoperative instructions that, if followed closely, will help ensure that your scars heal well and are discreet and not overly noticeable.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The cost of liposuction varies from patient to patient, depending on a number of factors, such as what areas are being treated and the amount of work necessary to achieve your unique goals. During your initial consultation, Dr. Miller will provide you with a cost estimate for your individualized treatment plan. At Orange County Cosmetic Surgery, we believe that you deserve to feel confident in your appearance, which is why we offer a variety of payment and financing options to help transform your aesthetic dreams into reality.

How Soon Can I Enjoy My Liposuction Results?

After liposuction, initial swelling and bruising are common, and these may mask the final results initially. Typically, noticeable improvements appear as the swelling subsides, usually within a few weeks. However, the complete effects of the procedure may take up to 6 months to fully manifest as your body continues to heal and adapt.

How Much Weight Can I Lose with Liposuction?

Woman displays trim, fit body after body contouring surgery liposuction in Orange County. Liposuction is primarily a body contouring procedure rather than a weight-loss treatment. It is best suited for removing localized fat deposits from areas like the abdomen, thighs, and arms. While you might see a small reduction in weight, the primary benefit is improvement in contour and proportion. Generally, Dr. Miller’s patients notice a mi during a single session, depending on the individual's health and body structure.

Will I Have Loose Skin Following Liposuction?

The condition of your skin post-liposuction largely depends on its elasticity. Individuals with good skin tone and elasticity may see their skin conform well to the new contours. However, if you have poor elasticity due to age, sun damage, or significant weight fluctuations, you might experience some degree of loose skin. Dr. Miller can discuss your options during a consultation and may suggest combining liposuction with a surgical lift procedure to remove excess skin for superior contours.

Is Liposuction a Good Solution for Cellulite?

Liposuction is effective for removing deeper fat, but it is not a solution for cellulite, which appears on the skin's surface. Cellulite involves fibrous tissue bands that pull on the skin, creating dimpling. There are other treatments specifically targeted at reducing cellulite.

How Is Liposuction Better Than Less Invasive Body Contouring Procedures?

Liposuction offers more dramatic and precise results compared to less invasive procedures like cryolipolysis or laser fat reduction. It allows for the removal of larger quantities of fat and provides immediate improvements in body shape. Non-invasive techniques generally require multiple sessions and take longer to show results, which are typically less dramatic.

Can Liposuction Improve My Overall Health?

While liposuction removes fat and improves body contour, it is not a treatment for obesity-related health issues. Reducing fat deposits might motivate patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but it does not directly improve health markers like blood pressure or cholesterol.

Is There an Ideal Age for Undergoing Liposuction?

There is no ideal age for liposuction as long as the individual is in good health, has realistic expectations, and has specific areas of localized fat that have not responded well to diet and exercise. However, younger patients typically have better skin elasticity, which can lead to more aesthetically pleasing results.

What Are the Risks Associated with Liposuction?

As with any surgical procedure, liposuction carries risks such as infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Choosing a qualified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Miller and following all pre- and post-operative instructions can minimize these risks dramatically.

Why Choose Dr. Miller?

When choosing a physician to perform your liposuction, the skill and experience of your surgeon are critical considerations.
