What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved injectable drug made of botulinum toxin type A. This protein is derived from a bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. Although it may sound odd that it is sourced from bacteria, BOTOX® is safe and effective.

  • In good overall physical health
  • Free of neuromuscular disease such as MS
  • Not breastfeeding
  • Not pregnant
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Informed of what BOTOX® can reasonably achieve and what it cannot achieve
  • Not allergic to any of the ingredients
  • Free from any skin infections on or around the injection site(s)

Dr. Miller has provided BOTOX® and Dysport for a long time. He is ready to help you decide if one of these injectables can achieve your goals, and then he will thoroughly review your health candidacy factors. He wants to make sure any treatment you ultimately choose is the right fit for you cosmetically, physically, and health-wise.

In addition to treating these types of wrinkles, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport can also be used for:

  • Reducing bunny lines
  • Helping to reduce chronic migraines
  • Reducing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Lifting the corners of the mouth
  • Reducing the appearance of a "gummy" smile

These injectable treatments are wonderful for helping to create a more youthful appearance quickly with no recovery time needed. In addition, they can be combined with other non-surgical treatments such as dermal fillers.

How Do BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport Work?

Facts about Dysport BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport work the same way, by targeting specific wrinkle-causing muscles and relaxing them so that wrinkles can't form. There is a misconception that BOTOX® Cosmetic will "freeze" your facial muscles so that you can't make any natural expressions, but there is no danger of this at Orange County Cosmetic Surgery; Dr. Miller knows exactly how much and where to inject.

What Is a BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport Treatment Like?

Dr. Miller will mark the specific injection points on your face before quickly performing the injections. Treatment is virtually painless; you will feel a few pinpricks, but these are over quickly and very tolerable.

Does BOTOX or Dysport Treatments Require Anesthesia?

If you are having treatment in a sensitive area, Dr. Miller will administer a topical anesthetic, but in general BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport do not require any anesthesia.

What is the Recovery Process Like After a BOTOX or Dysport Treatment?

There is no recovery time needed, and you can resume your everyday activities immediately after leaving Dr. Miller’s office. Side effects are mild and may include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Slight pain or muscle weakness at injection sites

You may have some slight swelling at the injection sites which should disappear after twenty or thirty minutes. In rare cases, you may experience some bruising around the injection sites. This can be covered with makeup, and should disappear within a few days.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport do not produce immediate effects. You should begin to see results within three to five days, with full results developing within two weeks. Results last anywhere from three to six months, depending on your individual metabolism, how many units were injected, and where the units were placed.

How Long Do BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport Treatments Take?

A typical BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport treatment takes only 10 to 15 minutes to perform.

Are BOTOX® and Dysport FDA Approved?

It’s been rigorously tested and studied, has a multi-decade safety record, and the stamp of approval from the FDA.

How long is the recovery from BOTOX® injections?

Fast! There really isn’t a recovery in the way we normally talk about treatment recoveries. You may wish to take at least a few hours off afterward to relax and watch a movie or do something else that is purely enjoyable, but it’s not necessary. Other than potentially having some redness and swelling, you should feel comfortable getting back to your day. You may want to wait 24 hours to do any strenuous activity like weight training, in order to give the injectable time to settle.

Are BOTOX® injections painful?

No, the vast majority of people do not describe injections as painful. They do, however, describe a slight pinch as the needle enters the skin, but it is momentary. If the injection is being made in a particularly sensitive area, Dr. Miller may use a topical anesthetic to prevent discomfort.

What are the potential BOTOX® side effects?

It’s possible you’ll experience redness, bumps, bruising, and a headache. Serious side effects are rare and usually can be controlled for by choosing a surgeon who will carefully evaluate your candidacy.

Is BOTOX® covered by insurance?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not covered by insurance for cosmetic uses. It’s possible if you were seeking the injectable for a medical reason like chronic headaches that it would be covered, but you will have to check your individual policy details. For the cosmetic reduction of wrinkles and fine lines, insurance almost certainly won’t cover it; however, talk to our team about financing and payment options.
