What is a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift is an elective surgical procedure in which Dr. Miller removes a section of sagging skin and excess fat. The result is tauter, smoother thighs with less weight and heft.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Thigh Lift Surgery?

Ideal candidates for a thigh lift are interested in slimmer, smoother, better defined thighs. Other candidacy factors include:

  • You want long-lasting results
  • You are prepared to undergo a surgical procedure and the recovery that follows
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You’re at or near your ideal body weight
  • You are ready to learn about the potential risks and benefits so that you can make an informed decision

Oftentimes, people interested in thigh lifts have undergone massive weight loss, such as the kind of weight loss achieved with bariatric surgery. When a significant amount of fat has been reduced, the skin that had stretched to accommodate the fat will now be left behind, sagging and deflated. While the skin may shrink back somewhat, no amount of exercise will tighten the hanging skin around the thigh contour. A procedure eliminates the sagging skin.

A thigh lift is also a good option for people who haven’t necessarily undergone major weight loss, but nonetheless want to define, contour, and slim their thighs. You may find that your normal fitness routine is not providing the level of definition and firmness that you want, and in such cases, a thigh lift may be a good option.

How is the Thigh Lift Surgery Procedure Conducted?

Thigh lifts involve making incisions to remove a section of skin and fat, and then tightening the remaining skin along the thigh contour. It may or may not include liposuction to remove stubborn fat deposits. The two most common techniques are the:

  • Medial thigh lift. Also known as an inner thigh lift, the medial incision is made along the crease of the groin. The incision may also extend downward on the inner side of the thigh, toward the knee.
  • Lateral thigh lift. An outer thigh lift incision extends from the groin crease over the hips. Lateral thigh lifts often include a butt lift as well, and the degree of lifting and skin removal tends to be more significant than an inner thigh lift.

Dr. Miller customizes each procedure to the individual. After examining the thigh area and discussing your goals with you, Dr. Miller will describe which thigh lift techniques will be the right match.

Schedule Your Consultation

How Long Will the Procedure Take?

The procedure duration depends on the individual procedure. The incision location, degree of lifting, and whether other procedures are performed simultaneously are all factors. In general, most thigh lifts take two to three hours. We will make sure you have a time estimate prior to your surgical day so that you can make a plan with your spouse, a family member, or friend to accompany you to your appointment and drive you home.

How Long Will the Results of My Thigh Lift Last?

Thigh lift results are lasting! The skin and fat removed are gone for good, but it is of course possible to gain new weight. Your skin will also develop a degree of sagginess and inelasticity with age, but it’s unlikely to be as significant as before. Most people feel highly motivated to pursue fitness and a stable body weight once they see their results, and doing so will help preserve the results.

Thigh Lift Recovery and Aftercare

You will need to take time off to rest and recover following surgery. It’s an outpatient procedure, so you will return home the same day as surgery. Most people need at least seven to 10 days off from work. You’ll need to take about six to eight weeks off from strenuous exercise and physical activities.

How Painful is the Thigh Lift Procedure?

Thigh lifts are typically performed under general anesthesia. You won’t feel any part of the surgical procedure itself. You will likely feel sore and a little uncomfortable in the hours following, and the next day. Dr. Miller will advise you of over-the-counter pain relievers or he will prescribe you a painkiller in advance of your surgery. You should feel a lot less sore and uncomfortable after the first several days.
